Protection From
Boot Viruses
// What is a boot virus?
A boot virus is a special category of virus. This type of virus has been designed to infect the boot sector of your computer.
// Why are boot viruses a significant threat?
Boot viruses work by first infecting the boot sector of the computer and then using the computer’s own processes to move the infection to the computer’s memory. Like all virus categories, boot viruses can be designed to perform a wide range of malicious attacks.
// How are boot viruses spread?
Boot viruses are spread when an infected disk, such as a hard disk, floppy disk, CD, or DVD is used to boot the computer. After infecting the computer, the virus is then transferred to the computer’s memory and can then infect every disk that is used on the computer.
// Where do boot viruses reside?
After infecting the computer, a boot virus will place its starting code in the boot sector. The computer will then boot that virus, placing the code into the computer’s active memory.
