It is the unpredictable nature of polymorphic viruses that makes them a significant threat. Since these viruses are able to change their code with each replication, each generation can become more dangerous and more difficult to detect.

Polymorphic viruses use a polymorphic engine to mutate. Once the new virus has been created with a modified code it can be spread through system files, program downloads, and communication attachments.

A virus is considered polymorphic simply by virtue of having the ability to alter its code with each generation. Viruses that infect boot sectors, program files, and the system’s active memory can all be designed to be polymorphic.
